Removing Rust From Metal (the EASY way)

Ways To Remove Rust From Metal

There are many products that claim to be able to remove rust from metal. But it may be difficult to find one that actually works.

There are also different types of metals that have to be carefully cleaned so that it isn’t scratched or damaged in the cleaning process.

There are many methods used to remove rust from metal ranging from a delicate cleaning to a complete scrub down. This all depends on what metal products you will be attempting to clean.

For smaller metals that include jewelry and silverware, you will not want to use anything abrasive. In order to clean these items, they will have to be soaked in a vinegar and water solution. Use a glass bowl and put a few caps full of vinegar in it. Use around a cup of water and mix the solution.

Place the item into the solution and let it soak for at least thirty minutes. For stubborn stains, you can remove rust from metal by using straight vinegar.

Always use white vinegar only.

If you need to remove rust from a household fixture, you could be concerned about scratches or ruining the item. You usually cannot soak these items in a watery solution but you can use a damp cloth and baking soda to gently scrub off stains.

You will want the cloth to be wet enough to hold the baking soda in place. Apply it to the rusty areas and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Gently start to scrub the entire area but do not put any pressure on the cloth.

Use circular motions while wiping the area to avoid obvious scratch marks and when you are finished, make sure to completely dry off the item. If the item is heavily rusted, you may have to repeat this process a few more times to completely remove all of the remaining rust.

Most gritty household cleaners contain chemicals and are unhealthy to breathe in. But baking soda can be used as a non toxic substitute for regular harsh cleaners.

Rust stains on metal car parts or bicycle parts that include the tire rim or bumper can be difficult to remove, especially if it is an older stain.

But with these items, you might not be concerned with a few scratches because they probably will not even be noticed. If this is the case, you can use a steel wool product. Some brands of steel wool even have soapy cleansers that can aid in the cleaning of rust. You can wet down the rusted area and the steel wool and scrub the area until the rust is gone.

Usually, if the rust damage isn’t that bad this type of metal will shine after a cleaning.

It can really help to dry the area thoroughly and add a small amount of a wax product to prevent rusting in the future.

For extremely difficult rust stains, the best way to remove rust from metal is to use sandpaper. This is usually what we need to do on metal building homes. You can use different grits to remove the rust but this method should only be used for big patches of rust.

There is the possibility that the rust has gone completely through the metal and if this is the case, you might have to patch up the holes.

There is also a chance that the shiny metal surface will not return even after it has been cleaned.

When this happens, you can spray the metal with a sealant and use a metal colored spray paint to cover the darkened areas.

Always keep metal items in a well ventilated area with little to no moisture. This way you can prevent any problems with rust build up in the future.
